The Enneagram Tapes (6 Cassettes)
Published in Audio Cassette by Sounds True (April, 2001)
Author: Eli Jaxon-Bear
Average review score:

Worth the bucks
I bought the tapes for my husband, not intending to listen myself since I'd read 4 books on the subject and don't like audio. On the verge of reselling, I decided to check them out and was ENORMOUSLY glad I did.

Jaxon-Bear does a much better job than others (Riso/Hudson, Helen Palmer) of relating the types to one another. He also delivers the information with a GREAT sense of humor and "phrase bites" which make it easy to assimilate all 9 types. With the books, I had trouble trying to digest and remember all of it. Not so here.

For each type, he gives "extra" info like:
- movies, actors/roles, and historical persons that exemplify that type
- a country whose culture is that type
- physical features common in the type (although not for all)

As for overall format, he starts with an intro on one side of a tape and then launches into the types (one type per cassette side). Each type is presented in two parts: he first gives an explanation, then invites people of that type to share their personal experience of it. Some of the group participation is hilarious, some of it is painful. In any case, it is all illuminating and entertaining. The set ends with a conclusion tape of "sharing".

In my opinion this set is worth listening to no matter how much other info you have on the subject.

Are you ready to give up everything you thought you were?
Eli Jaxon Bear must be a truly enlightened individual. I had never heard of him before getting this tape series. I like to listen to tapes, my wife likes the enneagram, ..., so I gave it a try. My life will never be the same. Of this I am certain.

I had already explored much of the ground that this tape covers: spiritual awareness, emotional healing, personality types, etc, but all of the information that I had collected was just brain fodder. I felt knowledgeable, but definitely not enlightened. It almost seemed that my knowledge was more of a curse than a blessing, because I could see my failings without knowing how to escape them. My life was miserable and I made everyone around me miserable.

After listening to these tapes, I finally feel that I am able to put all the pieces together. Now I can see the purpose for and the cause of my suffering. I now have the courage to let myself sink into the suffering and the fear and the terror and the anger and the rage, and find my true beingness on the other side. I can now have compassion for others who are blind to their spiritual confusion because I see it as my own. I now feel the freedom to just be without needing to understand. These tapes are a blessing.

Eli has an approach unlike any other. His examples of the personality types are almost always hilarious. This is the most serious and at the same time the most light-hearted approach I have ever encountered. Examples of each type are given from the movies and well-known personalities. Eli seems extremely well-rounded in his knowledge of current pop culture.

On the other hand, they are not for everybody. If you want to just be happy and not look at your dark side, if you want to use enneagram as a parlor game to label yourself and others, if you are unwilling to totally give up any vestige of selfishness, then you should try the lighter versions of enneagram.

A great story for "children" of all ages....teaches (or reminds) us the value of sharing. The illustrations are absolutely incredible. Why does it have to be out of print?? I bought one for a gift on clearance somewhere and now want one for myself and can't find it!

Field Guide to the Grizzly Bear (Sasquatch Field Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (August, 1992)
Authors: Great Bear Foundation and Lance Olsen
Average review score:

A lot of good information without a lot of reading!
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in grizzly bears. It contained a lot of important information without a lot of unnecessary reading. Short and straight to the point.
The sketches were beautiful. The book is also easy to carry along for grizzly bear watchers.

second edition (1996) better than the first (1992)
Now in its second printing, with correction of a couple earlier errors, the Field Guide to the Grizzly Bear covers 500,000 years of this species' existence in just 48 pages. As the author, I can appreciate how difficult it is to write about so much in so few words. The field guide series by Sasquatch had already set excellent precedents in earlier works on the orca and bald eagle by the time I agreed to compose a guide to the grizzly. The basic requirement is to get it down briefly, and to get it right. I think it works very well as a brief introduction to the history, natural history, troubled present and risky future for one of nature's great creations.

Firing Back/a Clear, Simple Guide to Defending Your Constitutional Right to Bear Arms
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (February, 1995)
Authors: Clayton E. Cramer and Clayton E. Crammer
Average review score:

It is so accurate, I couldn't put it down
This book is an excellent way to inform oneself of their constitutional rights and arguments to win any gun debate. I recommend it with all my heart. It exposes the dirty tricks of the anti-firearm statistacs that gun control advocates have used. It also tells you the honest to god truth behind guns in america. If you haven't read this book and own a firearm you don't know the half of the damage that gun control advocates have done to the publics view on gun owners. I urge you to read this and have a accurate information explain to people the truth about guns in america.

A clearly-written guide to gun policy & activism
The first part of the book is a short guide to gun rights activism, with advice on how to write letters to newspapers and elected officials, and other tips for activists. The much larger portion of the book covers various policy topics (for example, public health, crime statistics, various frauds perpetrated by anti-gun and pro-gun advocates). The information is presented in a clear, straightforward writing style, thoroughly supported by endnotes and other documentation. Thus, Firing Back is great one-volume source to help you write letters to the editor, educate your co-workers or friends about the gun issue, and turn yourself into a more informed citizen. First Comes Spring
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (February, 1991)
Author: Anne F. Rockwell
Average review score:

Seasonal Flavors
This is a delightful picture book that describes each of the four seasons as follows: First, we see a page showing Bear Child's house and landscape, then Bear Child is pictured and his clothes named ("This is what Bear Child wears today-rubber boots, overalls, a flannel shirt, and a Windbreaker jacket."), then a two-page spread showing an overview of what town bears do during that season (e.g., planting seeds, flying a kite), and finally, two pages of close-ups of the bears doing the activities pictured on the previous page. This systematic approach is a great way to compare and contrast the clothes, climate, flora, and activities of the seasons, yet it is never boring or repetitive: Anne Rockwell's pictures switch from wide angle to close up perspectives and this adds an unexpected twist. A very satisfying book with warm, bright, colorful, illustrations, and lots of details to explore.

The seasons from a child's perspective
This is a wonderful look at the four seasons, in a sweet Richard Scarry-esque format. Bear Child heads out to see what changes are occuring in his neighborhood, discovering that people are "working and playing" at seasonal activities. Each season has a full two-page spread of the village, and all of the bear-people are busy on the farm, in their yards and on the hillside. This is followed by two pages of the individual activities isolated and labeled. A wide range of activities are covered in the appropriate season: taking the snow tires off the car, camping out, watching the birds fly south, making snow angels.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. After checking it out of the library too many times to count, I am searching for the out-of-print book for our own collection. If your child loves to pour over the detailed books of Richard Scarry, she will probably enjoy this book as well.

Franklin Has a Sleepover
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Paulette Bourgeois
Average review score:

Enjoying A Friend
Franklin books are very good to read because they are always teaching you something new. Franklin is absolutely thrilled to have Bear spend a night. It also let the kids know it's ok to be homesick. I especailly liked how Franklin tried to make Bear feel better. In the book Franklin goes back to his room to make Bear feel more comfortable and gives Bunny a hug and says Good night to Bunny. In television episode, Franklin called Bear's parents and let him talked to his parents. Then they playe with the flashlight doing signals to Bears parents. Even though there is a slight difference between the book and the episode, they both had a good time. It teaches how you can make your friends feel less homesick whenthey spend a night with you.

Franklin is a true friend again
A perfect book for a young child to have before their first sleepover anywhere. It lets the child know it's okay to be homesick and that your friends or relatives are there for you when you're away from home. I know my daughter learns from every Franklin book and this one is no exception.

Go to Bed!
Published in School & Library Binding by Candlewick Press (August, 1993)
Authors: Virginia Miller and Susan Halperin
Average review score:

always gets a giggle
I actually checked this book out of the library for Alex, but it has made its way into the nightly rotation. When Bartholemew says "Nah, nah, nah, nah, NAH!" there is always a giggle, even though he's almost asleep. I can't wait to get 'On Your Potty'.

Perfect for my 2 year old
This book, along with Virginia Miller's other two books about these bears, "Be Gentle!" and "On Your Potty!" are pitched perfectly to the toddler set. In this book, Bartholomew, the toddler bear, resists going to bed even though he is obviously tired. He seems to be waiting for the big bear to set limits, though, because once he is *in* bed, he enjoys his hugs and tickles and (eventually) settles down. Miller's storytelling style miraculously resonates with my child and yet ultimately depicts the outcome that I, as the parent, want to happen - without seeming preachy, heavy handed, or in anyway untrue to life. The artwork is adorable too. Neither one of us has gotten tired of reading this book over and over after many months.

Golden Bear

Authors: Ruth Young and Rachel Isadora
Average review score:

We thought it was great
My twins, aged 5, love this book. I highly recommend it for its warmth and pleasurable illustrations. They love to read this book before going to sleep because it calms and quiets them. There really schould be more books for young children such as this. I will treasure it along with my childhood Winnie the Pooh books. It is a classic!

A WARM AND COSY TODDLER BOOK
This is a wonderful book about a youg boy and his best friend (the bear), who do everything together. The rhyming text is just enough to hold the (short) toddler attention span, and the beautiful, colourful ilustrations make for lots of conversation. This book is one that will be repeatedly read until the whole family knows it off by heart! Another great book for this age group is Bright Eyes, Brown Skin, by Cheryl Willis Hudson and Bernette Ford

Good Morning, Good Night
Published in Hardcover by Red Wagon (March, 1997)
Authors: Carmel O'Mara and Carmel O'Mara-Horwitz
Average review score:

tender, sweet, loving, and beautiful book for little ones
This tender book is my two year old daughter's very favorite. The wording is simple, very loving and sweet. The quiet joy shown as the parent and little bear begin their day together, then on the other side get ready for bed, is heartwarming and really appeals to my daughter. In addition, the obvious love the parent and little bear share is beautifully depicted by the exquisite illustrations. Also, the format of the book is unusual and fun; it is accordian-pleated with the morning story on one side and the bedtime story on the other. Another feature that I really like is that the animals are not obviously male or female, or of any particular race, so it can be directly applied to the parent and child reading it. It is really fun to imitate what the bears do - a stretch, smile, tickle, giggle, hug, and kiss for the morning, and a yawn, bath, friend (stuffed animal), story, snuggle, and sweet dream for the night. As a family practice physician and more importantly the mother of two, I am committed to the idea of close bonding between parent and child, and this book is a beautiful illustration of the mutual love and joy a child and parent can share. Altogether, a FANTASTIC book for any young child. Even my ten year old daughter likes it!

Thoroughly delightful book to share with your loved one
This book was wonderfully crafted and uniquely packaged. What a delight it was to get to the end of one side to realize that their was another of beautiful illustrations. Ms. O'Mara certainly captured the beautiful interaction between a parent and a child with these delightful illustrations. Truly a work of art.
